Mundeshwari Temple,

Kaimur district of BiharIt is situated on the Panvara hill of Ramgarh village, whose height is about 600 feet. British travelers RN Martin, Francis Buchanan, and Block visited this temple between 1812 AD to 1904 AD. According to archaeologists, the inscriptions received from here in 389 AD indicate its antiquity. The carvings and idols of the temple of Mundeshwari Bhavani are of the post-Gupta period. It is an octagonal stone temple. The grand and ancient stone idol of Goddess Mundeshwari in the eastern section of the temple is the main attraction.

The hill of Kaimur is situated fourteen kilometers south-west of the Bhabhua district center of Bihar., There is an ancient temple of Mata Mundeshwari and Mahamandaleshwar Mahadev on this hill with a height of six and a half hundred feet. This temple is considered to be one of the ancient temples of India, but there is no clear evidence of how ancient it is. Yes! There is evidence that oil and grains were arranged in this temple by a local king on the 22nd day of Kartik (month) in the thirtieth year of Samvatsara. It is mentioned in an inscription inscribed in the Rajagya. That is, it is known that this temple existed even before the inscription on the inscription. Presently this temple located on the hill is in the form of ruins. It seems that someone has broken this temple. The limbs of the idols are broken as if they were hit by some sharp weapon. The temple of Panchmukhi Mahadev is in a ruined condition. In one part of this, worship is done by erecting the idol of the mother in the south-facing form. There is a three and a half feet black stone statue of Mata, who is riding on a buffalo.

Cunningham has also mentioned this temple in his book. It mentions that there is Mundeshwari Hill in Kaimur, where the temple exists in a ruined form. This temple was discovered when some shepherds went up the hill and saw the appearance of the temple. This was a total of 20-25 years ago. It was not as popular then as it is now. In the beginning, only the people living at the bottom of the hill used to light lamps and offer prayers in this temple. At present the temple is managed by the Board of Religious Trusts, Bihar, and arrangements for worship are made. A fair is held on this hill from Magh Panchami to Purnima in which devotees come from far and wide.

It is said that when the goddess was determined to destroy Chand and Mund, after the destruction of Chand, Mund hid in this hill while fighting and it was here that the mother killed him. Therefore it is known by the name of Mundeshwari Mata among the local people. A funny thing, wonder and reverence whatever one may say, a goat is sacrificed here after the wishes of the devotees are fulfilled. But, the mother does not take blood sacrifice, but at the time of offering the sacrifice, amazing faith in the mother develops in the devotees. When the goat is brought before the idol of the mother, the priest touches the idol and throws Akshat (grains of rice) on the goat. The goat immediately becomes unconscious, almost dead. After a while, the process of throwing intact happens again, then the goat stands up. This act of sacrifice increases the faith in the mother.

If we look at the stones and pillars scattered on the hill, many Siddha Yantras and mantras like Shriyantra are engraved on them. There is a Shivling at each corner. It seems that the temple of Mata Mundeshwari would have been established in the eastern-northern region of the hill and idols of various gods and goddesses were installed around it. The fragmented idols are kept on the way to the hill or are in the Patna Museum. As mentioned in the inscription, the place here was organized as a Gurukul Ashram. There is also a cave on the hill which has been closed for safety.

Coins have also been found on the way to this temple and some letters are also inscribed on the stones of the hill in Tamil, Sinhalese language. It is said that devotees from Sri Lanka used to come here. Bahrahal, many secrets are still hidden in the womb of the temple, not much is known, only the mother is worshipped. Devotees remain engrossed in the faith of Mata and Mahadev. During the visit to the temple, it appeared that the temple itself is hiding many experienced spiritual forms, just the cover is not being lifted. The author was interviewed with many factual experiences.

Seeing the antiquity of the temple and the growing faith in the Mother, the state government is constructing restrooms, ropeway, etc. for the convenience of the devotees. A road has been constructed leading to the temple located on the mountain, on which small vehicles can go directly to the temple gate. Stairs can also be used to reach the temple.

Bihar State Tourism Corporation buses ply daily from Patna to Ramgarh, a village at the foot of the hill. To reach here by rail, one has to get down from Patna or Gaya at Mohaniya station. The help tempo, jeep, and minibus can be taken to reach the temple from Mohaniyan.
