Discover More

Overview

Telhar Kund—also known simply as Telhar Falls—is a picturesque waterfall located near Balumath in Latehar district (on the border with Chatra), Jharkhand. Cascading from a height of roughly 50 feet, it plunges into a clear natural pool at the base. Surrounded by dense Sal and Mahua forests, the falls create a tranquil environment that draws nature lovers, day-trippers, and families seeking a refreshing getaway.

Approximately 75 km from Ranchi and 25 km from Latehar town, Telhar Kund is especially popular during the monsoon and post-monsoon months when the water flow is at its peak. Its scenic setting and unspoiled surroundings make it an ideal spot for picnics, photography, and short treks through the surrounding hills.

Legend & Mythology

  • Local lore says that Telhar Falls was discovered by a wandering sage who noticed its healing waters and declared it sacred, believing that bathing here could cleanse one’s sins.
  • Some tribal stories recount that a deity of the forest resides behind the waterfall, and villagers offer prayers during harvest season to seek blessings for a bountiful crop.
  • It is also said that Mughal emperor Akbar once passed through this region en route to Odisha, and the falls were named “Telhar” after he compared the waterfall’s mist to the richness of sesame oil (“til” in Hindi).
