Overview

Shiv Shakti Temple, located on the banks of the Ganges in Bhagalpur, is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in eastern Bihar. Dedicated jointly to Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti, this temple was constructed in the late 18th century by local zamindars who revered the Shaiva-Shakta tradition. The complex comprises a main sanctum housing a Shiva lingam adjacent to a Shakti shrine, both richly decorated with traditional motifs and vibrant colors.

Architectural Features

The temple’s architecture blends traditional North Indian shikhara style with local terracotta ornamentation. The main mandapa (hall) is supported by intricately carved sandstone pillars, each depicting Shaiva iconography—tridents, Nandi bulls, and lingam motifs. The sanctum sanctorum houses a black granite Shiva lingam alongside a red sandstone idol of Goddess Shakti (wearing a crown and holding a trident). Outer walls feature terracotta panels illustrating scenes from the Shiva Purana.

  • Central shikhara (spire) rising to 18 meters, crowned by a gilded kalasha
  • Mandapa pillars carved with Nandi bulls, dancing Ganas, and Shiva’s family motifs
  • Terracotta façade panels depicting Shiva and Shakti lore, glazed in earthy reds and ochres
  • Inner courtyard (nandimandap) with a stone Nandi bull statue facing the Shiva lingam

Spiritual Importance

As one of the few dual-dedicated Shiva-Shakti temples in Bihar, Shiv Shakti Temple holds deep significance for both Shaivites and Shaktas. Pilgrims visit year-round to seek Shiva’s blessings for strength and Shakti’s blessings for prosperity. On Shivaratri and Navratri, the temple is illuminated with oil lamps and decorated with flowers, drawing thousands who perform night-long chants of “Om Namah Shivaya” and “Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu”.
