Overview

Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary was declared in 1991 along a 60-km stretch of the Ganges River near Bhagalpur. It is one of India’s three designated dolphin sanctuaries, established to protect the endangered Gangetic river dolphin (Platanista gangetica). The sanctuary features deep river pools, sandbanks, and riparian vegetation that support diverse aquatic life. Besides dolphins, visitors may spot gharials, river turtles, and numerous fish species. The area is also culturally significant, lying close to the ruins of the ancient Vikramshila University.
